Two Poems from Red Clock by James Knight

Dark

if you look at him
the Bird King pulls levers
            making objects move
                                       in the dark

now and then
a man or woman
asleep or dead
reaches     for       him

                        across             the                               water

but he isn’t there
or anywhere

Hell

the red clock grins toothily

                        my       my

the Bird King skitters
                                         about the molten kitchen

naturally you feel threatened
                                         so you shrink into blue

first principles
                                         loss and derision
